What the Snuff?
Brachycephalic (short faced) breeds like French Bulldogs, Pugs, and English Bulldogs have become incredibly popular across New Zealand, but summer can be especially tough on them.
Their shortened airways and compact faces make it harder for them to cool themselves, meaning hot, humid days put them at much higher risk of heat stress than other dogs. As temperatures climb, it’s important for owners to take extra care—avoiding exercise during the hottest parts of the day, offering plenty of shade and fresh water, and keeping them indoors with fans or air‑conditioning whenever possible.
Even short car trips can become dangerous quickly, so leaving them in vehicles is never safe. Watching for early signs of overheating—such as heavy panting, drooling, restlessness, or wobbliness—can make all the difference.
With a few mindful steps, we can help our beloved squishy‑faced companions stay comfortable and safe throughout the Kiwi summer, celebrating their charm while protecting their wellbeing.
