I know we talk about these a lot, but with good reason. Fleas and internal worms are constantly with us. Often unseen, but that doesn’t mean they are not impacting your pet, or you.
Internal parasites will compete with your pet for the nutrition in their intestines. As the worms pass through, they can cause damage to the lining of the intestines, making your pet more vulnerable to other infections and bleeding. Worms can also cause anal irritation (and scratching). High worm burdens, in young pups, can cause bowel blockages that require major surgery.
International recommendations are a minimum of 3 monthly internal parasite control, more often for puppies and kittens and animals under larger burdens, or family with children or major health issues like immune suppression. For kittens and puppies, this is worming 2 weekly from weaning through to their last vaccination. Adults; worming 3 monthly in most households.
Our professional recommendation is to ensure pets are adequately covered all year round. Statistics show that a lot of pet owners are not giving their pets the recommended parasite control to help combat these issues.
Fleas can cause skin irritation and scratching, hair loss, and can aggravate other skin diseases. They can act as a transmitter for blood borne parasites in cats and in extreme cases, can cause anaemia. So, they may not look like much, but they can pack a punch. And worse still, they can be transmitted to humans, where they can have the same effects. Please ask our team what would be best for your pets flea and worm control.
After a long wait, we now look forward to “Bravecto Quantum” arriving soon which is a yearly flea and tick treatment for dogs. We expect this will make flea control much simpler for many owners. We also have 3 and 6 monthly Bravecto for dogs, 3 monthly for cats and Seresto collars for cats and dogs which last 8 months.
